Supporters of Imran Khan, the main opposition leader in Pakistan, have clashed with police outside his home in Lahore as officers tried to arrest him on allegations of unlawfully selling state gifts while in office.
The situation outside the compound remains tense as police try to force their way in.
The supporters responded to the arrest attempt by throwing stones and bricks, prompting police to fire tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
This is not the first time that police have attempted to arrest Khan, but the former prime minister believes that they are determined to put him behind bars this time.
Despite this, he remains mentally prepared to face any outcome, saying,
“I’m mentally prepared that I’m going to be spending my night in a cell. I don’t know how many nights, but I’m all prepared for that.”
Khan believes that the case against him is politically motivated and that the authorities are trying to prevent his party from participating in forthcoming elections.
However, he remains confident that his party will emerge victorious regardless of whether he is incarcerated or not.
His supporters have also held protests in other cities in solidarity with their leader.
Khan was ousted as prime minister last April but has since continued to pressure his successor Shehbaz Sharif with demonstrations and speeches.
He has called for early elections this year and blames Sharif for an assassination attempt that took place during a rally in November, which left him with a leg wound.
Despite facing multiple challenges, Khan remains determined to continue his political fight and has positioned himself as a high-stakes election gambler in the upcoming elections.
